In keeping with an ancient tradition, customary in all countries in the Mediterranean region, Italy also has its national anise-seed flavored liqueur called the Sambuca.Sambuca is a strong, sweet liqueur. Its main ingredients consist of essential oils obtained by distilling vapors of an anise seed called star anise and then diluting with pure alcohol, followed by adding a concentrated solution of sugar and other natural flavors to this core formula.
Even in ancient times, anise was valued for its medicinal properties. The plant originated in China. Over the course of several centuries, it spread throughout Mediterranean countries, where it is used as a spice in preparing meals and desserts. Anise essences have always been used to make liqueurs, for example French pastis, Turkish raki and Greek ouzo.
The name Sambuca is thought to be derived from the Arabic word for anise, Zammut. The term zammù is still used in the Sicilian dialect for an anise beverage that is diluted with water.
